Professorship of Early Modern Swiss History

The Chair of Early Swiss History and Comparative Regional History is dedicated to researching and communicating the history of the Swiss region from the late Middle Ages to the early 19th century. Special attention is paid to the transnational view of Swiss history in the «longue durée», which consistently embeds the history of the "Corpus Helveticum" in transnational, European contexts. In teaching and research, the politics, society, economy and culture of ancient Switzerland are equally represented thematically. Special attention is paid to the persistence of pre-modern institutions in the republic, which was the only one in Europe to survive the political shake-up of the Revolution and the Napoleonic period.
