An Archipelago of Interactions. The formation of the Danish Caribbean 1671 – 1814.

The present project proposes a study of the Danish West Indies's societal (trans)formation between the establishment of the first settlement (1671) and the early years of the nineteenth century. The Danish West Indies result particularly interesting since they represented a microcosmos definable as a “contact zone” in which various European and African practices and (cultural) patterns blended in a territory markedly different from the ones they originated from. The result was a society that was much more than a mere reproduction of European and African elements, as these were transformed and new aspects came into being.

In other words, notwithstanding the strong European influence, European categories and conceptions cannot be simply applied upon this space and the individuals who inhabited it. This leads to pose questions on a wide variety of  topics beyond Eurocentric perspectives, which help not only to understand the Caribbean past better, but to open concepts and ideas based predominantly on European experiences and parameters to further discussion.
